The Secret Behind Tolerances: Why Microns Make a Big Difference

In precision manufacturing, "tolerance" refers to the allowable variation in a part’s dimension. While these deviations may seem minuscule often measured in microns they can have significant consequences in performance, reliability, and overall product quality.

Why Tolerances Matter

Even the best design is only as good as its execution. In industries where precision is critical—such as aerospace, medical devices, and automotive—tight tolerances ensure that components fit, function, and interact exactly as intended. A misalignment of even 10 microns can lead to mechanical failure, leaks, or excess wear, especially in assemblies with high rotational speed or pressure dynamics.

Understanding the Micron Scale

A micron is one-thousandth of a millimeter. For perspective, a human hair is roughly 70 microns thick. In machining, holding tolerances within ±10 microns can mean the difference between a high-performance component and a reject. Achieving this level of precision requires not only advanced CNC/VMC equipment but also skilled operators, rigid quality systems, and climate-controlled environments.

Cost vs Precision

It’s important to recognize that tighter tolerances typically come with increased costs. More precision means slower feeds, additional inspections, specialized tooling, and potentially more material waste. That’s why understanding the functional need for each tolerance is key. Over-engineering tolerances where they aren’t necessary can lead to inflated costs without adding value.

The PrimaForge Approach

It's worth noting that in modern precision engineering, successful manufacturers are those who balance design intent with manufacturability. Delivering components that meet stringent tolerances while remaining cost-effective is what sets PrimaForm apart.
